Local Councils Sign IT Contract to Share Resources

Barking & Dagenham and Havering Councils have joined a scheme to share IT services with four other local governments.

The councils have signed a four year contract with IT company Capgemini to save money and improve council services for the combined population of 1.6 million.

Lambeth, Brent, Croydon and Lewisham Councils will be joining the East London boroughs in the initiative that is a part of Project Athena.

Project Athena aims to join corporate IT systems across the 32 London boroughs, with the aim of creating a single IT platform for all the London public sector organisations.

Havering council have been using Capgemini since May 2012 when it signed a £2.9 million contract to transform its back off IT systems.

The new systems are expected to go live in July 2013, and will be managed by Capgemini for an initial period of three years.

Sharing IT services has been a growing trend in local government as councils face increasing budget pressures.
