Four sets of public toilets in Redbridge could close if the council force through £4 million pounds worth of savings. A leaked report to the Wanstead and Woodford Guardian show they want to close the facilities in South Woodford, Newbury Park, Seven Kings Park and Cranbrook Road, which are used by nearly 3000 people. 90 year old Christopher Wilson, Chair of the Redbridge Pensioners Forum say they plan to campaign against the proposed closures.

Four couriers from Barking who stole thousands of pounds of high-tech electrical goods have escaped jail. 44 year olds Trevor Griffith, Clive Myrie and Margaret Thomas, and 32 year old Faye Clark, took around £7000 worth of goods they were supposed to deliver. They've been given supended sentences and community service orders.

Redbridge police are hunting a pair of robbers who stole over a thousand pound from an off licenece in Ilford. The men broke into Carlos Wines and Spirits on Eastern Avenue in the early hours of Monday morning. They took the money from the till and also tried to drag a cash machine from the window - but were disturbed by police so left it.

A controversial bishop who invites non-Christians to prayer sessions has set up a new Church in Ilford. Outspoken Bishop Michael Reid's church 'What God Can Do Ministries' will meet at Ilford Sports Centre on Sunday afternoons and Thursday evenings. He's courted controversey by quitting his former church near Brentwood 2 years ago. Bishop Reid says he doesn't think he's doing anything unusual inviting people of other faiths.

Work has started on the renovation project of Barking Park. The work is partly funded by a three and a quarter million pound grant, from the Heritage Lottery Fund plus funding from the Barking and Dagenham council. The council are working with the Barking Allotment Society to reduce the impact of the works on the allotment site. When completed the park will have a new cafe,visitors centre, childrens play area and public toilets.

The number of alcohol related requests for help from the London ambulance service has risen for the 5th year in a row. Around 150 call-outs by paramedics were for people with problems after consuming alcohol. The number of call outs in Redbridge has increased by nearly 50 percent in the last 5 years.

Police are appealing for information after a digger and roller that was being used by Transport for London were stolen in Ilford. The machinery, worth £23,000, was found on Hainult Road in Little Heath last Thursday. Police are still looking for a white van which they think may be central to the crime which happened on 11th August.

Parents and carers will be able to apply for their child's school place online within the Havering and Redbridge from today Online admissions make it easier and quicker to apply. This year the advantage of applying online is the ability to find out the results online after 5pm of the day the notification letters are sent out rather than waiting for the post to be delivered.

One in 5 children across Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge are still taken to school by car. New figures from the Department for Education show that pupils travel around one and a half miles to school. The number of people walking to school is inceasing - in part thanks to walking bus scheme.

A taxi driver and his wife have begun prison sentences for committing more than 100 thousand pounds of benefit fraud. 58 year old Richard Sullivan, and his wife Julia, who is 38, are from Elm Park. They were jailed for 15 months each for falsely claiming council tax and housing benefit. They were caught by Havering Council after an anonymous tip-off.

A man who terrified shoppers in Sainsbury's carpark in Barkingside with a knife has been spared jail. 22 year old Hasseb Zafar rushed at police with two knives during a stand off at the Tanners lane store He pleaded guilty to two charges of possession of a knife - the judge didn't send him to prison on mental health grounds.

A man who used to live in Rainham has been jailed for 15 years after he repeatedly raped a 10 year old girl. 28 year old train cleaner Osman Osman who's orignally from Turkey began assulting his victim whist his wife and child were on holiday. Judge Peter Rook said Osman "took advantage of a child's naivety"

Police and council officials in Barking and Dagenham say their borough-wide crackdown on street drinking is working. From 31st of May this year it became an offence to drink anywhere on a street in the borough. In the past month police have made more than 50 seizures have been made.

Trading standards officials say there's an increasing problem with fake alcohol in Barking and Dagenham. Hundreds of bottles of potentially dangerous counterfeit vodka - with a retail value of about nine thousand pounds - were seized in the raid which took place earlier this month. Fake spirits are dangerous because they have been made in uncontrolled conditions and could contain a cocktail of chemicals such as methanol, which could cause dizziness, breathing difficulties and even blindness if drunk.

An unemployed man from East Ham has been charged with sexually assulting a woman in Ilford. 46 year old Bajit Singh was bailed until December the second after appearing at Redbridge magistrates court. Police are unable to release any more details to protect the victim.

6 people from Barking have been sentanced to a total of 9 1/2 years in prison for their part in more than 30 burglaries from mobile phone shops. The gang who are aged between 19 and 41 took more than £200,000 worth of stock in the raids between June of last year and April this year. The judge at Southwark crown court has recommended the 6 from Romania are deported after they serve their sentances.

A 28 year old man's been arrested over the death of a seven year old boy in a hit an run in Ilford. Ehsaan Haque from Portsmouth was hit by a van and dragged 55m underneath the van as he was visiting relatives on Leyswood Drive. He died of multiple injuries at Southampton General on 10th August. Police recovered the blue Toyota Hiace Powervan last friday from Collier Row.

Police in Spain have arrested a man wanted for the murder of Rocky Dawson in Hornchurch in 2006. 61 year old James Tomkins has been the subject of a search by police for 4 years. Rocky Dawson was shot dead in May 2006 in front of his young children. Tomkins will appear before a Madrid Court tomorrow when extradition proceedings will begin.

Firefighters at Ilford firestation have reduced their carbon footprint by nearly half in the last year. They've taken steps as part of the RE-FIT programme - Ilford was one of ten across London used as tests before it's roled out across the captial. Romford fire station have also been saving energy - they saved around a tenth.

An area of land in Ilford has been dug up in an effort to try and stop sex workers using it. The land opposite Uphall Rec has become a haven for prosititues because of bushes that meant you couldnt be seen. It's all part of a campiagn by police and councillors trying to rid the borough of sex workers.

The Pakistani High Commissioner to Britain will be the guest of honour at a fundraising dinner to support the Pakistani Flood Disaster Appeal. Wajid Shamsul Hasan will attend the fundraising dinner at Redbridge Town Hall on September 24th. It's been organised by Council Leader Keith Prince and 3 other councillors.

A school lab technician from Romford has been jailed for tricking a pupil into wearing a dust mask doused in commercial strength chloroform. Jared Shreeve - who's 41and lives on South Street - told the 17-year old girl she needed it because of dangerous fumes in a storeroom. Snaresbrook Crown Court in London heard she passed out and suffered a chemical burn on her face. Shreeve has been sentenced 30 months for administering a poison with intent to injure, aggrieve or annoy.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was stabbed in Dagenham. The 23 year old was attacked by a group of youths by McDonalds at Dagenham Leisure Park in the early hours of Sunday 8th August. He was stabbed 6 times during the attack and was taken to the Royal London Hospital and remains in a stable condition.

Up to 40 new jobs will be created in Hornchurch as a major UK retailer comes to the town. Waitrose will be opening up on the High Street in November. The store, who are owned by their staff, will be turning two shops 'Bathroom Shop' and 'Special Days' into one.

This year's Redbridge carnival will be raising cash for the Pakistani flood appeal. The event which is usually free will charge a pound to get in - with the money going to British Pakistani Christian Association Flood Appeal. British Asian singer Sofia Hayat will also perform a specially penned song at the event at Valentines Park on 11th and 12th of September.

A teenager has appeared in court to deny murdering student Aliza Mirza in Manor Park in April. 18 year old Yahya Gul of Charlbury Gardens in Ilford has been remanded in custody until the trial on October 11. Aliza Mirza, who was also 18 and from Ilford, was stabbed in the neck.

Local campaigners are up in the arms that Romford Post Office has officially opened up in WH Smtihs - with their 5000 signature petition seemingly ignored. The new post office is located on the first floor on the store in the Liberty - something which campaigners say make it inaccessible to people with mobility issues. The petition was presented to Post Office bosses at a Havering Council meeting. Former Havering Councilor and local campaigner Eamonn Mahon thinks the petition wasn't given any thought. An investigation is underway into how a maisonette in Rainham caught fire on Sunday morning. 20 firefighters were required to put out the fire on Sparrow Green. A man had to be rescued from the building by firefighters and was treated for smoke inhalation.

The controversial Olympic structure that could block TV signals in Redbridge could be a step closer after a meeting tonight, The Olympic Delivery Authority will meet to decide whether to approve the plans for the ArcelorMittal Orbit and pass them to the next level - The London Assembly. The Tower designed by Turner Prize winning artist Anish Kapoor would be 114 metres high and become a focal point of the games.

Romford is the third highest pie eating town in the UK. Figures from Tesco show that over 2 hundred thousand pies were bought in the past year. Leicester came top - although it looks like Essex is the pie eating county, Romford were joined by Pitsea and Southend in the top ten.

Three men serving life sentances for gunning down a Romford man in front of his young family have been told they can appeal their convictions. 39 year old Mark Tredinnick was shot 8 or 9 times with a sub-machine gun in Benskins Lane in June 2007. 26 year old Wayne Collins from Romford and 2 brothers Mark and Tony Osborne were convicted in February last year and are all serving at least 30 years. A judge at London's Criminal Appeal court have ruled that the convictions are arguably 'unsafe' and that the men can appeal.

A pioneering new service that will help elderly and vulnerable people in East London access care services is being launched next month. People 4 People is joint project between the 3 local councils and Waltham Forest. It's hoped the service will match people to potential carers and make the management of care much easier.

A minicab driver from Harold's Hill has been found guilty of helping a major drug dealer transport cocaine. Derek Tucker, of St Neot's Road, was found with 4 KG of the drug - worth £320,000 - in the boot of his cab. Tucker told police he'd been paid to collect some packages for drug dealer Edward Kivern, but said he had no idea what was inside them. Both men have been remanded in custody.

The Metropolitan Police are consulting on plans to fence off some of Wanstead Flats during the Olympics as a police briefing area. It's controversial because of a Victorian law prohibiting building on or fencing off parts of Epping Forest. The police say that they won't build any permanent structures and will return the land to normal after the games - but local campaigners are worried that changing the law could set a dangerous precedent.

More than 2500 people in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge have been caught without a TV licence in the last 6 months. New figures show Barking and Dagenham were the worst offenders - over 1200 people failed to pay the £145.50. They face a fine of £1000 pounds if caught.

The amount of sick leave taken by Havering police is double the Met average. One in every seven, or 56, of the borough's 389 officers was on restricted duties, sick leave or recuperative jobs. This has left the force's frontline understaffed by more than 14 per-cent, nearly three times more than that of healthier forces in the capital.

A man from Ilford's been sentenced to 120 hours community service after being caught paying another man to sit his driving theory test for him. 44 year old Jatinder Kaur Randhawa handed over £450 for the service. 2 people from West London have been sent to prison for sitting the tests of Mr Randhawa and 3 other people.

A man has been arrested in Ilford after police found class A drugs at a suspected den. Officers found the drugs, along with a knuckle duster and various weapons at the property on St Peters Close. They'd recieved a number of complaints from residents about suspected drug dealing in the house.

The Duke of Gloucester will visit the borough on 6th September to formally open Claybury Park. The park has been taken over by the council from private developers. The Duke's visit will also take in Gants Hill library, which has also been recently refurbished.

Dagenham and Redbridge striker Josh Scott has been bailed after he was arrested on suspicion of GBH. It's reported he attacked a 22 year old woman with a glass in a West End club at the weekend. She's lost several teeth but has been discharged from hospital.

Police are renewing their appeals for witnesses after a 9 year old was was left with serious injuries in a hit and run in Romford. The boy suffered serious leg and head injuries when he was hit by a driver as he crossed Whalebone Lane South on his bike at 9pm on 28th June. The black car with tinted windows was driving erratically just before it hit the boy.

The site which is on the majority of the current Ilford Jewish Primary School is expected to be multi-faith. The primary school is due to open next September - aimed at trying to ease the demand for places.

Police investigating the murder of 2 women in Beckton on Thursday have named the victims. 40 year old Svetlana Zolotovska and her mother, 70 year old Antonia Belska both died of stab wounds. A 42 year old man who was found near the scene of the murders is still in hospital under arrest.

A row over a beer has landed a man in trouble after he beat up a man from Barking. Danny Amos helped himself to a drink at a friend's house, but when Christopher Mallet objected, Amos punched him. He pleaded guilty to assault before Barking Magistrates and will be sentenced tomorrow.

Up to 5000 people made the most of traffic free streets in Redbridge yesterday and got on their bikes. The Sky Ride saw 8 miles of roads in the borough shut to normal traffic. It was the second of 3 events being held across the captial by mayor Boris Johnson this year.

A bank manager from Collier Row who conned HSBC customers out of 30-thousand pounds has been jailed for 18 months. Carl Nejatti, of Hillfoot Road, exploited his senior position as business manager to move money from customer's accounts into his own personal account. The married father of two claimed he carried out the two and a half year fraud to cover debts after his wife gave up work and gave birth to their son.

A man from Ilford has appeared in court over the murder of a woman who was foudn with her hand severed. Geeta Aulakh, who was 28, was found in a South London street with fatal injuries and her right hand cut off last November. It's thought she was attacked as she travelled to pick up her two children from their childminder. So far three other men, including Mrs Aulakh's estranged husband, have appeared before the courts charged with her murder, all three of whom have been remanded in custody.

Thousands of Londoners will be taking to two wheels today for the Mayor of London's Sky Ride in Redbridge. Thousands of cyclists are expected to take advantage of the traffic free roads as Boris Johnson tries to encourage more of us to get on our bike. And his transport advisor Kulveer Ranger says the capital's bike hire scheme could be coming to East London in the future.

A pregnant bank manager from Dagenham will have her baby behind bars. 30 year old Hazera Begum has been jailed for two years for a 95 thousand pound fraud. The judge called her 'irresponsible' for getting pregnant knowing she was facing possible imprisonment.

The post mortems of the mother and daughter brutally stabbed to death in Beckton yesterday will take place this morning. Police are still holding a man in his 40's who was found with serious injuries in the loft of the house on Leamouth Road where the elder of the two women was found. It's believed the man is the ex-husband and father of the murded women - police are appealing for witnesses to either murder.

A man who raped 2 Dagenham girls at a rail depot has been jailed indefinetely. 59 year old John Nokes who worked for Network Rail, filmed himself molesting the girls aged 9 and 12 in his office - which was equiped with a dolls house and toys. He admitted over 30 counts of sexual abuse of minors.

The pin badges designed by each London borough for the Olympics have gone on sale. Havering's has a picture of the Upminister Windmill, Redbridges has the Winston Churchill Statute while Barking and Dagenham has the saxon inspired monument 'The Catch'. The designs were chosen by the public last year.

An Upminister school for disruptive pupils has been declared outstanding by an Ofsted inspection. Oglethorpe pupil referal unit in Ashvale garden has achieved the highest possible score by the schools watchdog. The school caters for youngsters between 5 and 18 who are unable to attend mainstream education because of behavioural difficulties.

A man from Dagenham will appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on September the 18th over an attempted murder at the end of July 22 year olf Brian Deckor of Raydons Road is accused trying to kill a man in Maxey Road on 31st July. The 23 year old victim is stable in hospital. Another man in his 20's has been bailed until September.

A man from Romford will serve 20 years in prison after being found guilty of the manslaughter of a taxi driver. 49 year old Martin Newman of Wadeville Avenue was trying to smuggle liquid cocaine disguised as a bottle of run. 63 year old Lascelle Malcome from Haringey died after drinking the lethal cocktail - which he was given by a friend as a thank you for picking her up at Gatwick Airport. She'd been given the 2 bottles - with an estimated 20 thousand pounds worth of cocaine in each - to carry through customs.

An inquest's heard how a Rainham man committed suicide days after his wife told him she would be filing for a divorce. Father-of-one Kennedy Sylvester, of Roman Close, locked himself in his car and died from carbon monoxide poisoning in January. Mr Sylvester was found outside the community centre in Nelson Road by the caretaker who noticed a red Renault car parked at the rear of the building. His wife later found evidence on the family computer that he had visited websites on how to kill himself.

The leader of Redbridge Council is hoping to organise a fund-raising event for the flood appeal for Pakistan. Cllr Keith Prince says he hopes to have plans by the weekend after discussing the idea with fellow councillors. Over 14 million people have been affected by the serious flooding.

A seven year old boy who was dragged under a van for 20 yards in a hit-and-run in Ilford has died. Ehsaan Haque was hit while crossing Leyswood Drive. The van driver continued on with the boy trapped underneath the vehicle, then left him critically injured while he disappeared onto the A12.

An elderly couple received a call from a man claiming to be a police officer saying their bank cards had been used for fraud - he came and collected the cards and took a statement. More calls then followed from a woman claiming to be from their bank Police are reminding residents that officers will always carry identification and will never ask for bank cards, account details or pin numbers

Confusing road traffic signs are being blamed for a huge rise in fines in Barking Town Centre The buses and bikes only route between Station Parade and Ripple road was introduced at the beginning of the year, and since then the number of tickets given to motorists in this 500 metre stretch alone has increased 12 times The number of fines issued has increased from under 300 in December to a massive 2300 in February.

A Redbridge MP is determined to clamp down on clampers. Conservative MP for Ilford North Lee Scott is pushing for a code of conduct to be introduced to stop excessive parking fines. He is hoping to change the amount of money clampers can charge as well as making them more acocuntable. Mr Scott has accused clampers of making up their own rules and playing with the law, charging massive sums in excess on 700 pounds on some occasions.

We need to pay more attention to our Wanstead neighbours apparently That's the message from NHS Redbridge who have released information which shows children there are some of the healthiest in the area. A report has revealed the best and worst performing wards in terms of childhood obesity and keeping kids fit and healthy. Cranrbook has the highest levels of obseity across reception aged children and Loxford has the highest level in year six.

Police are appealing for information following a double shooting in east London. Officers were called by London Ambulance Service at 23.51 on Saturday 7 August to Dunkeld Road, Dagenham to reports of a shooting. Officers arrived at the location, but the victims of the attack had left in a Range Rover Sport. They were later traced to Millhaven Close, Romford. A 23 year old male was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. He was taken to hospital where he is currently in a life changing condition. The second victim, a 21 year old man, is suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. He is in a stable condition in hospital. Barking Riverside has won it's first award before anyone's even moved in The 10,000 home development has been crowned project winner in the Housing Design Awards Barking Central also won the title of Best New Public Space in the prestigious awards Chief Executive David Birkbeck says it's very uncommon for one area two swoop two of the prizes and that Barking and Dagenham should be proud.

Fed up of being branded a ghost town, business owners in the area are teaming up to try and boost trade with new chairman Steve Eaton at the helm. Thieve got away with 9 thousand pounds after attacking the driver of a cash in transit van in Chadwell Heath. The driver had just collected money from the train station when two men ran towards him. They made off with the cash box in a silver Ford Focus waiting on the other side of the road driven by a third man. School children in Havering are being excluded from classrooms for offences as serious as carrying weapons and sexual misconduct. New figures show around a thousand kids a year are excluded from local schools - around 30 of those are expelled permanently. In one case two young pupils, from an unnamed primary schools, were permanently removed for attacking staff - something that appears to be on the rise.

More people in Barking and Dagenham go bankrupt than anywhere in London. Figures from The Insolvency Service for 2009 show one in 321 residents here are either declared bankrupt, have a Debt Relief Order or an Individual Voluntary Arrangement. The figures are in contrast to those of London generally which has one of the lowest levels of personal insolvencies in the UK.

A man is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot in Hackney. The 19-year-old suffered several gunshot wounds in Powell Road yesterday afternoon. The Metropolitan Police said the victim was airlifted to a north London hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A Romford thief with more than a-hundred convictions has been sentenced to nine years in jail for the savage beating of a pensioner. Jason Ross Sufi of Blanford Close, was on the run after a series of armed robberies when he broke into his victim's home. His appeal against the sentence was dismissed at London's Criminal Appeal Court - Mrs Justice Rafferty said the sentence reflected the gravity of his crimes and his long history of previous offending.

More details have emerged about the hit-and-run accident in Ilford in which a seven-year-old boy was dragged under a van. He was hit by a blue van on Leyswood Drive - eyewitnesses have told police the driver carried on driving with the boy still under the vehicle. The child was taken to a central London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

A man from Barking's been sent to prison for 3 years after he was found guilty of stealing railway cable. 41 year old David Woodward of Crouch Avenue was caught after his DNA was found on a water bottle near the scene of the theft in Rainham. Woodward took over 300 metres of lineside cable from the line near Ferry Lane.

Youngsters in Havering will be able to swim for free for the rest of the summer despite the government scrapping the scheme nationally from today. The free swimming programme for under-16s was scheduled to run till next March, but the government recently announced the cash had run out and the programme would be cut short. But Havering Council Leader Michael White says free swimming will be available for young people in Havering until September.

Police and environmental health officers are investigating how a 21 year old man died in a fast food outlet in Seven Kings on Tuesday. Eyewitnesses say the man died of an electric shock at Tasty Chicken on High Road. A post mortem is expected later this week.

Deputy Leader Councillor Rocky Gill, Margaret Hodge and Robert Clack School Head Sir Paul Grant met with Mr Gove to discuss the cutting of the Building Schools for the Future programme. The coalition government annouced that funding for building and IT infrastructure in the borough were cut earlier this month.

The trial continues today of a man from Dagenham who's charged with planting child pornography on a collegues computer. A jury at the Old Bailey heard 39 year old Neil Weiner hoped to be promoted if 60 year old Eddie Thompson was dissmissed from Swanlea Primary in Whitechapel. Mr Thompson claimed he was set up after Mr Weiner sent a CD to police claiming they were on the computer. Weiners denies perverting the course of justice and possession indecent images.

The Met's launching its first ever site aimed at 11 to 16 years olds, which will include information about crime prevention and cover issues like bullying, drugs and gangs. A new sports center is being opened in Dagenham today by Olympic rowing gold medalist Tom James. The 'Adizone' is a new sports area at Mayesbrook Park that includes an outdoor gym, climbing wall and open areas designed to encourage dance and gymnastics. Tom who won gold at the 2008 Beijing Games will be guest of honour at the new center's launch.

A Horchurch Law Graduate accused of spreading terrorist propoganda is facing a retrial after a jury failed to reach verdicts. 22 year old Mohammed Gul of Elm Park Avenue is accused of posting violent Islamic extremist videos on the internet. A jury at the Old Bailey cleared him of one count of transmitting a terrorist publication but were unable to reach verdicts on 2 other counts. Judge David Paget has set the date for a retrial of September 27th.

Havering was awarded eight titles, Redbridge three and Barking and Dagenham just one for having healthy, safe and tidy parks. The roads being closed for the Redbridge Sky Ride on August 15th have been revealed. The route is expected to see about eleven thousand cyclists travel from Redbridge Cycling Centre to High Street, Barkingside. Eight of the roads will be completely closed to traffic and another sixteen roads will be partly closed. Residents of the roads, which include Baron Gardens and Carlton Drive have been told they will not be allowed to drive back into their roads during the event. Drivers will be banned from driving from 9am-5pm, with riders set to take the roads from 11am-4pm on the day.

The number of young people entering the criminal justice system in Redbridge has fallen dramatically. Less than 150 people in the borough entered the system in the 6 months between April and September last year - a drop of 24 percent The council are attributing the drop to their inclusion work with the police.

Local residents from Redbridge could have more say in how the council spends their money. Redbridge Council are planning on holding a 'Redbridge Conversation' night for locals to attend and vote where they think taxpayers money should be best spent. The Council previously carried out a conversation in 2008 but some residents weren't happy with the scheme. No date has yet been announced for the next conversation but details will be released soon.

The family of a man who was killed by a speeding driver in Goodmayes have blasted the 6 month sentance given to his killer. 48 year old Javid Asghar was knocked down by 18 year old Mudassar Khan while crossing the Green Lane. Khan from Littlemoor Road in Ilford was doing 54 mile per hour in a 30 zone - he left without calling for help and only returned on foot later.

Barking and Dagenham Council has announced it's still planning on building new homes despite national government cuts. The go ahead's been given for 71 new council houses across six sites. This is the third phase of the council house building scheme that'll see three and four bedroom houses go up right across the borough. The good news comes as other public housing projects are shelved as the new coalition government look to save money and cut the deficit. Once planning permission has been secured, work is expected to start in the autumn and be completed by the end of 2011. It'll brings the total number of new council homes built by Barking and Dagenham to 142.

A poroposal to stop takeaways opening near schools and youth clubs has been dismissed. A Redbridge Council meeting last week decided that the project would not achieve it's goal of helpin to tackle childhood obesity. With 20% of children in year six in the borough currently obese, some council members are pushing for support the proposal, but local businesses are worried about the efffect on their trade and argue that a blanket ban will never work .

Surprising new figures show Barking and Dagenham has the highest number of smokers anywhere in London. More than one in three adults in the borough lights up regularly - that's around 52-thousand people in total. A Hornchurch man has been jailed indefinitely for battering his ex-girlfriend over the head with a rubber mallet. 39-year-old Trevor Baker attacked Carolyn Kemp when she came to his home to pick up their children, leaving her permanently brain damaged. In the days leading up to the incident Baker strangled the family dog, set fire to three grand and warned a neighbour saying "I've got to kill her, she's got to go."

Barking Central in Barking Town Centre was officially completed in May and scooped one of the gongs. A sex shop owner is persisting in his bid to show lingerie in the shop window after his application was rejected. B.C. Books in Bennetts Castle Lane in Dagenham are still not allowed to display lingerie in their window despite Bradley Rose’s application for change. The council ruled that because his shop is in a busy area where children are passing the displays are not appropriate. Rose says he’s disappointed and displays would help make the shop more appropriate for couples. Despite a petition of 125 people against his application, Mr Rose also insists he has had no complaints since his store opened.

Bosses have been forced to axe courses after budget cuts of £1.2 million - and adult learners are taking the brunt of it More student will now have to pay for courses that ever before and up to eight jobs are at risk of redundancy. The college said it is working with the university college union to try and reduce this risk and minimise the effect on the students and community.

Falling numbers of punters means that owner Dave Wright has three months for things to pick up or the doors will have to close for good. Drivers who steal thousands of pounds of petrol from filling stations are being targeted in a police clampdown. Five East London boroughs, including Barking and Dagenham, are using high visiblity patrols and unmarked cars at theft hotspots to capture the motorists who are believed to be behind serious crimes. They usually avoid being caught by using stolen number plates, but Chief Inspector Mick Forbes says their behaviour will not be tolerated and they will be prosecuted.

A woman accused of killing her autistic son by making him drink bleach has appeared in court. Satpal Kaur Singh from Barking entered a not guilty plea to murder at the Old Bailey. Her 12-year-old son Ajit was found with fatal injuries at the family home in February. Singh was remanded in custody to face trial on 15th November

Police are hunting a lone gunman after a man suffered fatal injuries in a street shooting. He was found collapsed in Higham Station Avenue, in Chingford, late last night. The man, who was 39, later died in hospital. The force's Trident unit, which specialises in investigating shootings, is responsible for the case.

Police looking for the attacker of an England football fan during a mass brawl in Goodmayes have revealed the extent of his injuries. They're hoping it will make anyone who saw the fight - that happened after the England v Algeria match - will come forward. The slightly-built 28-year-old's in a critical condition after what police called a "savage beating" during the brawl at The Bridge House in Goodmayes Road on Friday, June 18th. Doctors put him in a coma after he suffered a fractured skull, forehead and cheekbone - a broken nose, and was given 57 metal staples. Police said there is "no suggestion" the disorder was related to the game.

Essex Police have issued descriptions of two men wanted in connection with a robbery of a man in his 70's in Brentwood. It happened at the start of last month just off Queen's Road. The man was stabbed in the arm after challenging three men who entered his property. The first man is white, around 24-30, 6 foot with a large build. The second man is about 18, skinny, 5 foot 7 inches tall.

A gang of thieves who lauched a daylight raid on an Ilford Jewellers have all been sent to jail. The robbers took just 20 seconds to smash through re-inforced windows of Saratha Jewellers on Ilford Lane. They took £9000's worth of goods stuffed in pillowcases in November last year. 20 year old Abdul Said of Mortlake Road was sentaced to 8 eight years - due to his previous convictions. 19 year old Mohammed Alasow of Mount Pleasant, who also has a series of other convictions was given 7 and a half years in a young offenders institute. 3 other men from Iford and Hackney were also sentanced to time in a young offenders institiue.

The two men accused of poisoning birds and animals at Wanstead flats will appear in court again in August. Former Newham Council workers Terrence Webb from Ilford and Mark Page from Romford allegedy stole pesticide from their workplace and used it around Alexandra Lake. Two businessmen in Dagenham have been fined for selling counterfeit vodka. Murad Heyvari and Ali Mohamadi have been fined £500 for selling the fake vodka in the 7 till 11 shop in Becontree. They've also got to pay £750 to the council after pleading guilty in court last week. They were caught out after a planned visit by trading standards.

The NHS are appealing for people who've used the services at King George or Queen's Hosptials to take part. Plans to change maternity services in North East London are currently under review.

Budding film-makers are being given the chance to get their work shown at the London 2012 Olympics. 13 to 25-year-olds have been invited to submit a short film celebrating the games' values - such as respect, friendship, determination and inspiration. The winning piece will be beamed on to giant screens around the country, as well as being shown at 2012 venues.

A man from Rainham has been jailed for 71/2 years for his part in smuggling £11m worth of canabis in a lorry of cucumbers. 44 year old Paul Gurr from Allen Road was the mastermind behind 11 other people including a man from Dagenham. Two separate consingments were caught in a covert sting by Essex Police and Serious Organised Crime Agency. The other 11 men were jailed for nearly 60 years in total.

Two men have been charged over the deaths of 80 birds and a dog at Wanstead flats in March. 27 year old Terrence Webb from Ilford and 35 year old Mark Page from Romford will appear at Redbridge Magistrates next Tuesday. The men, who worked as pest controllers for a local authority have been charged with offences including using pestiside without approval to poisoning animals.

Police are becoming increasingly concerned about the welfare of a 73 year old man reported missing in Redbridge. Gurnmej Singh hasn't been seen since leaving an address in Hermon Hill in Wanstead yesterday morning. Mr Singh has a history of depression and only speaks basic English.

Doctors have put the man who suffered serious head injuries at a pub in Goodmayes into a coma. The 28 year old was injured during a 50 man brawl at the Bridge House Pub on Friday night. He's been put into a 7 day coma which lets his brain recouperate.

Police investigating the death of a man in Chingford just before Christmas last year have release more CCTV footage of potential witnesses. The latest pictures are from around the Obelisk pub in Church Road shortly before 23 year old David Joslin was attacked. He died after being knocked unconsious acting as a peacemaker to a fight outside the pub.

Local campaigner have been giving their reaction to Tesco's plans to build a distribution centre at Beam Reach. The plans, which were unvieled last Wednesday, could see 900 jobs created for Rainham. Both Havering Council and the London Devlopment Agency have warmly welcomed the plan. But - Graham Williamson from the Adamsgate group welcomes the plan but is urging caution.

A 28 year old man is in a critical condition in hospital with serious head injuries after being attacked at a pub in Ilford. Police and Paramedics were called to The Bridge House Pub on Goodmayes Road in Goodmayes just before 11pm on Friday. 900 jobs could be created in Rainham if Tesco are given permission to build a new distribution centre. The plans unvieled this morning would regenerate the Beam Reach site by the side of the A13. Previous plans for a prison were dropped earlier this year.

A housing charity are warning the chancellor George Osborne that any cuts to housing investment in next Tuesday's budget would place nearly 2,000 jobs in the concstruction industry at risk in Havering and Barking and Dagenham. They predict at around 9 percent of the 20,000 workers could lose their jobs and Julia Pitman from Shelter says its not just the construction industry that will be affected.

A man suspected of having a knife at the Royal Anglian march through Barking on Tuesday will appear at court at the end of the month. 54 year old John Philips from Bow was arrested for allegedly having a lock knife after he was involved in scuffles with Muslim anti-war protestors. Members of far-right group English Defence League threw sausages at Muslims against Crusades before 60 of them clashed outside Barking station. Philips will appear at Barking Magistrates Court on June 30th.

European real estate company Meyer Bergman have bought the Mall Ilford for 71 million pounds. The shopping centre, which attracts 11 million visitors a year, benefits from commuter traffic because it is opposite the train station. Meyer Bergman say see the purchase as a long term investment.

People in Havering will soon be able to access 53 hectares of fantastic open space thanks to this new bridge. It's all part of the Beam Parklands Improvement Project which plans to improve park gateways, footpaths and cycleways leading into the park from Havering. The council hopes more residents will now make use of the park - especially runners, cyclists and children.

The 15 year girl from Barkingside who'd been missing since last Thursday has no more than £20 with her. Police are very concerned for Sara Ahmad's safety as she has severe hearing problems and doesn't have her hearing aid with her. Detectives from the Homocide and Serious Crime Command unit are pouring over CCTV footage looking for her.

A surgeon is fighting for his career today in front of health watchdogs Gideon Lauffer was was sacked by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust last year after allegations of surgical errors. Lauffer had been reinstated by officials when the trust didn't follow proper prociedure whilst investigating the deaths of two patients. Now they've lined up a six day fitness to practice hearing to determine his professional future.

A man from Dagenham has been sentanced to 10 years in prison for cutting the throat of a man at a wake. 33 year old Brian Bailey attacked Dennis Flemming who had stepped in as Bailey was rowing with a 17 year old man who was talking to his sister. Bailey will be in prison for at least 5 years and will be on licence for life upon his release.

A car has smashed throught the window of a petrol station in Seven Kings. The silver daewoo ended up lodged between the isles at the Esso garage on High Road just after 9.30am No one was seriously hurt and the driver was taken to King George Hospital with very minor injuries.

Organisers of this years Redbridge Carnival are appealing for help. The two day festival of music, entertainment and dancing has already been pushed back a week, now organisers are asking for help The committee is looking for people to prmote, organise and fundraise for the event in Valentines Park, Ilford on September 11th and 12th. The annual event invites schools to take part as well as performers, speakers and activity organisers.

The list includes the killer of have-a-go hero Sukhwinder Singh who was stabbed on Uphall Road in Ilford. Since the leisure centres here in barking and dagenham offered out free swimming sessions to the over 60's - nearly three thousand of you have taken it up. Now the council say because it's been so succesful, they're going to offer more activities for free. That includes things like aerobic classes, badminton and squash. They're concerned a new consultation by the council at the library could mean a reduction in service. There are calls for the by-election for a council seat in Redbridge to be paid for by the Labour party. Conservative and Lib Dem candidates are angry that a by-election had to be called for Chadwell Ward because of the ineligibility of the Labour candidate Mark Gittens. Mr Gittens was forced to resign because he worked for the council. The by-election will cost the council £12,000.

Police have arrested a suspected escaped prisinor in connection with two separate knife attacks on the same woman in Barking. Officers tracked down 48 year old William Bewley at a house in Kent last weekend. He's been on the run for nearly 10 years and is wanted for 2 attacks on a woman in December 2004 and May 2007. He'll appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on August 16.

A Dagenham man has been caught with a cannabis farm in his garage after officers came to investigate problems wihth noise at his home. Officers went to Daniel Cooper's house on Sedgemoor Drive to take away his stereo system. It's because they'd been complaints he was playing his music too loud. It was then police found the cannabis farm in his garage. He's now been fined over a thousand pounds for breaching a noise abatement order.

A mugger from Dagenham who repeatedly threatened to stab Tube passengers has been jailed for 5 years. 26 year old Adham Khan of Beam Avenue used a knife to mug people on the tube - taking their phones and saying he'd kill someone because he was in a bad mood. The incidents on trains from Heathway, Hornchurch and Becontree stations happened in late January and early February.

A man has been charged in connection with the triple shooting in Newham last Saturday. A 36 year old man died in the incident on Katherine Road. Unemployed 34 year old Kevin Powell from West London has been charged with the attempted murder of a 26 year old man and possesison of a firearm. He's been remarnded in custody until a later date.

Following the shootings in Cumbria, police in Barking and Dagenham are cracking down on replica guns... They say since the tragedy last week, they've had call out to four seperate incidences here, all involving replica guns or pellet guns - the type that fire ball bearings. Superintendent Ellie O'Conner says parents should make sure their children don't get caught up by having a replica.

It's over a year now since a big initiative started to try to clean up Redbridge and five areas have been targetted as part of it. As part of this scheme, the clean up team spent five weeks tidying up Newbury Ward... They've now just finished visiting over four and a half thousand homes and collecting 73 tonnes of rubbish - thats about the same weight as 10 double decker buses! That includes 300 tins of paint, 97 pieces of home exercise equipment and 48 lawn mowers. Altogether, the big clean up project has collected a wopping 487 tonnes of rubbish.

Police in Grays are looking for a missing kitchen knife which they believe could have been used to stab a man who died. 59 year old Daniel Thomas, who was also known as Dave was found at his flat in Darnley Road on May 17th. He'd died of multiple stab wounds, police are unsure whether they are self-inflicted or not. Mr Thomas hadn't been seen since mid-April before he was found.

Havering Council is coming in for some criticism after it created another cabinet member to deal with cutting red tape. Michael Armstrong has been given the role of transforming the the finances of the council - as they look to cut over 24 million pounds. His role will cost the council an extra 32 thousand pounds - which has angered other members. It's widely expected some council staff will lose their jobs as goverment funding was cut.

A 18 year old accused of murdering Aliza Mirza will face trial at the Old Bailey in the Autumn. Yahya Gul appeared via video link at the Old Bailey to be told the timetable of his trial. A plea will be entered on July 2nd with a trial date set for October 11th. 18 year old Aliza Mirza from Seven Kings was fatally stabbed in Manor Park on April 3rd.

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was stabbed in Romford. It happened between 9am and 10am in a flat above shops in the High Street. A man thought to be in his fourties suffered multiple stab wounds. He's been airlifted to Royal London Hospital.

Romford police had to use a Taser stun gun yesterday evening to stop a man they suspected of having a gun. They were called to a house in Ayr Way at ten past eight to reports of a firearm. The man was stunned but not injured and was taken into custody.

The man who was shot and killed in Forest Gate on Saturday has been named. Thirty-six year old Patrick Ford from Tottenham was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot in the chest on Katherine Road. Two other men were shot and remain in hospital. A man in his twenties remains on custody after being arrested for murder.

Officers from the Food safety team replicated purchased by teenagers at some of the 208 takeaways in the borough. Laboratory results showed that a high proportion of daily recommended limits were in one meal.

New parking charges for Redbridge parks have been started today. The apply to Valentines, Fairlop Waters, Seven Kings, Goodmayes, Clayhall, Ray and Barkingside Rec. Wanstead Library is also bound by the new rules that see prices rise to 10p for first hour - with a maximum charge of £3 for over 3 hours.

A man has been left with serious head and facial injuries after being attack by a gang outside a redbridge swimming pool. The assault happened last sunday, the 16th of May, in the early hours of the morning and the 28 year old victim needed hospital treatment after the four asian men aged between 25 and 40 attacked. Twelve prostitutes have been cautioned in a crackdown by Redbridge police. Officers from the Loxford safer neighbourhood team issues the warnings during an operation on Ilford Lane at the end of last week. The prostitutes were cautioned for 'rowdyism' and possession of drugs - two were arrested for other incidents.

A brand new museum charting the history of Havering opens permanently this afternoon. The Havering Museum in the Brewery has been funded by a grant of nearly a million pounds from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Its the first time in 6 decade that the borough has had a heritage hub.

Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge council are all coming underfire for their use of spying powers. The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act was introduced in 2000 and allows interception of phone calls and internet usage. Over the past two years there were 49 cases of the councils spying on residents - Havering were the worst offenders using the powers 28 times - mainly to check on underage alcohol sales.

Two men from Rainham have been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after a paramedic was seriously injured after being hit with a quad bike. The man was treating people on the Western Esplanade at Southend on Sunday when he was hit by a quad bike that collided with 2 cars. He suffered multiple broken bones and needed surgery.

The councillor who was ineligible to stand for office when he won his seat in the recent Redbridge Councillor election has resigned Mark Gittens was told he had to go after it emerged he was a teacher at Wanstead High School. Council employees cannot stand for council elections in the borough where they work. A by-election will be called in the Chadwell ward in the coming days.

Redbridge policer are appealing for witnesses or information after a car jacking in Ilford last Friday. A 75 year old man got out of his car to move a recycling box that had been placed in penhurst road as a trick when he was overpowered by a male who then drove off in his car. The white man who drove towards barkingside has been described as late twenties, athletic build with short fair hair. The victim was left dazed but with no injuries.

Dagenham & Redbridge have confirmed their place in the League Two play-off final. Paul Benson scored his 21st goal of the season - and had one disallowed - as Morecambe won the second leg of their semi final 2-1 - Daggers winning 7-2 on aggregate. Five men charged with murder of a man who's thumb was found in Ilford have been told that they may not face trial until after October. They were told as they appeared at St Albans Crown Court. No high court judge is available on the set trial date on 4th October. Mahmood Ahmad hasn't been seen since he disapeared after leaving work on March 7th. His severed thumb was found in a car park days after his disapearance.

Havering residents have received 20 new benches for central park after having their say. As part of the council's Harold Hill Ambitions Project a consultation has begun with residents to see what improvements they'd like to see in the park - and now they'll be able to enjoy the view from one of 20 new benches The number of benches had dwindled over the years but now new ones provide a welcome rest on the main pathway, under trees and on the grass Additional litter bins and picnic tables are also on the way and further consultation will take place to continue the improvements

A war veteran from Gants Hill's been conned out of 500 pounds. The great garandfather was tricked out of the cash after conmen told him he'd need to pay up because a sewerage problem coming from his garden was affecting nearby Valentines School. The 89 year old panicked and handed over 500 pounds. After checking with the school he realised it was a con.

A 17 year old boy was repeatedly punched in the face while being robbed by two people claiming to have a knife in Ilford. It happened on Jefferson Close in the early hours of Saturday morning. The victim had his Ipod stolen in the attack by the suspects who are described as Asian men between 16 and 18.

The hunt is on for a man who indecently exposed himself to female passengers on a train going between Rainham and Grays. It happened on Saturday April 3rd about 8pm. A group of women on the C2C train were sat together when the man - who's described as Asian in his late 20's, medium build and 5 foot 7 - exposed himself. The same man is believed to have done the same thing on a train between West Ham and Limehouse.

Mahmood Ahmad has been missing since March the 7th. 35 year old Sabra Sultana from Kiwi Terrace in Ilford has been charged with perverting the course of justice and conspiricy to falsely imprision. A 41 year old from near Leicester has been charged with assisting an offender.

Two members of a gang which robbed a bank and department store in Romford have had their prison sentences cut. Shilpa Patel from Tudor Crsecent in Hainault was jailed for 10 years for plotting a robbery and possessing a firearm but that's now been cut to seven year. And Nicholas Drakou from near Newmarket was jailed for seven years for similar offences but that's now been reduced to five.

Police are launching a fresh appeal after a man was murdered in Hornchurch in 2006. 24 year old Rocky Dawson was shot dead in the town almost exactly four years ago now. 54 year old Christoper Pearman was jailed for life for his murder but detectives still want to trace another man - James Walter Tomkins. A 20 thousand pound rewards up for anyone who can hand over information leading to his arrest.

Instead of coming thursday the meetings on the public consultation will now be held on thursday May 13th at Ilford Jewish Primary School. Police are appealing for witnesses after an burglary in Redbridge last month. It happened on March the 31st on Pulteney Gardens in South Woodford. The 80-year-old victim answered the door to two males who pretended to have repaired her roof. After handing them over 50 pounds another suspects followed her into the house and stole a further 50 ppunds.

A mother of two forced to leave her home in Ilford, is appealing to the public to help her find her ex-partner. Police and firefighters were called to a domestic incident at Grace Lugolobi's home on Ley Street six months ago. It swiftly turned into a chemical alert as four litres of hydrochloric acid was found spilled inside. Her former partner, Henry Musana was tried and found guilty of destroying or damaging property despite failing to show up at court. Miss Lugolobi and her two sons are now living in a hostel and waiting for Musana to be found so justice can be carried out.

Barking and Dagenham Council say they're planning to build 200 new council homes in the area. A change to their funding means they could be in line for more money from the Housing Revenue Account. Coupled with the extra £10 million the council has received in recent weeks, they're hoping to kick start the building programme this financial year. Gascoigne, Goresbrook Village and the Leys Estates could all be in line for redevelopment.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a rape in Newham last weekend. A 56-year-old woman was attacked at around 1.45am on Sunday morning as she was returning from a pub in East Ham. She was befriended by a man who showed her a shortcut to where she was staying. He then raped her in a car park between two blocks of flats in Boleyn Road. The suspect is described by police as Asian, 19-23 years old, about 5'7" tall, slim build, wearing a light-coloured hooded tracksuit with white stripes and black trainers.

Pupils from Abbs Cross School brought back more than they bargained for after a day visit to France. French border police became suspicious after sniffer dogs picked up human scent under the coach of year 11 pupils - and found three illegal immigrants cowering in the chassis. The stowaways were arrested and after hours of delay the school group were released with no charge.

Careless motorists who leave valuable items on display in their vehicles will soon be getting crime-fighting information packs in the post. Chadwell Heath police will be looking out for parked vehicles with valuables and gadgets like sat navs clearly visible, tracing the owners, and sending them the packs. It comes after a 12 per cent increase in thefts from cars last year. The scheme should be up and running in the next few weeks.

On Sunday 28th March 2010 at approximately 1215 hrs in Albany Road Hornchurch, a young male was taken by force by a male suspect. The male suspect described as aged late 20'a early 30's, slim build and about 5 foot 9 inches with short dark hair was driving a large dark vehicle - possibly a Volkswagen 4 X 4 vehicle. The Suspect took the victim to Grenfell Avenue where the victim was assaulted before being returned to Albany road and dumped from the vehicle. The victim has received injuries that not only required hospital care but also exasperated underlying health issues. The victim has since left hospital care and whilst he remains shocked and shaken he is recovering with this family. Police are following a number of leads but would ask for assistance from anyone who may have been in the area and may provide vital information. Figures collated by the Tax Payers alliance also show that Chief Executives of the Three councils in our area are earning up to 93 pounds an hour. A fifth man's been charged in connection with the kidnapping of a man whose severed thumb was found in Ilford. Mahmood Ahmad has been missing for over 3 weeks since disapearing after leaving work on March 7th. 36-year-old Amirzada Hussain from Upton Park has been charged with conspiracy to falsely imprison. Four others from East London have previously been charged.

Two teenagers from Ilford are being sentenced today for robbing a security guard. The boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted stealing a cash box holding £25,000. It happened on January 10th outside a Barclay's Bank in the town of Sandy in Bedfordshire. The two youths - aged 14 and 16 - will appear before Luton Crown Court today.

A surgeon employed by the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University NHS Trust is facing a hearing to decide if he can practise again. Gideon Lauffer was sacked last June when colleagues lost confidence in him amid allegations of mistakes in his surgery. The General Medical Council had suspended him but the Trust were forced to continue to pay him due to clerical errors on its part. The hearing is expected to begin on June 14th.

Redbridge Police have handled 20 dangerous dog offences in the borough over the last year. It's after an increase in people owning illegal dog breeds. The Metropolitan Police have had to set up a special Status Dogs Unit. The most recent was last month, when police stepped in to stop a dog fight in Valetines Park in Ilford, leading to an illegal pit-bull type dog being taken by officers.

A person who was shot in Ilford Lane disappeared before paramedics could get to the scene. It happened on Thursday but when ambulance workers arrived at the scene they only treated two women who said they weren't involved in the shooting. Police are investigating what happened.

The Essex Federation of Small Businesses says many companies here are caught out because utility providers often roll over their contracts when they come to an end - often with higher charges too and without asking customers first. A man has been arrested after crashing into a house in Ilford. It happened early on Thursday when the driver was asked to pull over by police. He sped off afterwards and crashed into the house. A man who murded a teenager in Dagenham in 1989 has been told he will spend the rest of his life in prison after being found guilty of killing a second man. 43 year old Royston Jackson from Norfolk was sentenced to life in 1990 after the brutal murder of Stephen Raven. Following his release Jackson murdered a man in Norwich in 2008.

A Dagenham woman has been sentenced to 200 hours community service at Snaresbrook Crown Court for nearly £4,000 of benefit fraud. 42-year-old Vicky Robinson, of Downing Road, told the Department of Work and Pensions that she was a single parent and claimed for housing, income support and council tax benefits She was in fact living with her employed partner between November 2006 and May 2008. She was ordered to pay £1,325 costs as well as repaying the benefits.

Plans for an academy to train workers building the Crossrail rail link have been helped by 5 million pounds from the Learning and Skills Council. It's hoped three thousand people will study NVQ and healthy and safety courses at the tunneling academy by 2015. The Crossrail project itself is set to open in 2017, and will run from Maidenhead and Heathrow to Shenfield and Abbey Wood, through Ilford, Goodmayes, Chadwell Heath and Seven Kings.

A man from Redbridge is the latest to appear in court following a shooting in Lancashire. 23-year-old Uwais Ilyas from Colombo Road in Ilford appeared before Preston Crown Court yesterday charged with conspiracy to murder. Ilyas is the fourth person to be charged with the incident which happened in Preston on February 12th. 25-year-old Manjit Sandhu from Hornchurch and 18-year-old Kasha Hayes are two of the others charged.

Havering Council built only 45 per cent of the affordable housing needed in the last year. The figures from the charity Shelter ranked Havering 40th out of 321 English local authorities. They say 875 affordable homes need to be built each year in the borough - curently less than 400 are being built annually.

Shoppers on Chadwell Heath high road will feel safer in the next few months thanks to a £1.3million investment. Barking and Dagenham Council also received £40,000 from the Home Office. The money's being used to replace and upgrade CCTV cameras, give shopkeepers counterfeit note detection systems, and to improve the look of the area. Similar work is being planned for roads across Dagenham.

A chinese restaurant in Dagenham has been shut down after inspectors found it was infested with slugs and woodlice. Hygiene officials found droppings in saucepans and next to the sink while live slugs and woodlice were crawling out of the drain at Mr Wong's in Oxlow Lane. The owner has been fined and the restaurant will remain shut until the problem is sorted.

Barking and Dagenham could soon self-sufficient for energy if a proposed facility for Dagenham Dock is given planning permission. The plant would turn rubbish that would otherwise gone to landfill into enough gas to power 31 and a half thousand houses. Owners could be fined up to a thousand pounds for taking their dogs onto Ilford War Memorial Gardens, childrens play areas or sports pitches. Primary school children in Thurrock could soon be saying 'bonjour' to a new language in a Anglo-French partnership. 17 teachers visited the 'le Var' region of France in February to continue the partnership that started last October. Anti-expansion campaigners are up in arms that it could be a further two years before there's a public enquiry into a second runway at Stansted airport. The delay is caused by the current uncertainty of ownership of the airport - the current managment say they won't be able to submit another planning application until its sorted. The motorcyclist who died on the A13 in Barking last Friday morning has been named. 42 year old Gary Duncan from Dartford died after he was involved in a fatal collision with a lorry on the flyover at Alfred's Way. A post mortem gave the cause of death as multiple injuries. An inquest at Walthamstow Coroner's Court has been adjourned to a later date.

Ringleader Gary Bellchambers was given 4 years and 3 months, Roy Cottee from Rainham: 12 months while his wife Kay was given a suspended sentence of nine months. Year 6 pupils across Redbridge are learning how to be better citizens this week Its part of an joint initiative betwwen Redbridge Council Police and other emergency services. A series of demonstrations on subjects including public transport safety and how to deal with a chip pan fire will take place to show the youngsters what can happen.

Two Unions have now joined forces to fight plans for an Academy in Redbridge. The multi million pound school has outline planning permission to be built after 2012 on the Cricklefields site in Ilford. It'll be sponsored by the charity ARK Schools - Absolute Return for Kids. The NUT (National Union of Teachers) and the ATL (Association of Teachers and Lecturers) fear the local community won't have enough control over the school; saying it could pave the way for the institutions to be run for profit. But the Council says outside funding is the only way the area will get much needed sixth form places.

Two public meetings are to be held in Barking and Dagenham over changes to health services in the borough. On Monday this week hundreds marched in protest against the plans to close the A and E at the King George hospital. The meetings will focus on the changes that are happening here, alongside looking at maternity services and help for children and young people. The first meeting's today at the Barking Learning Centre and the second will be at Dagenham and Redbridge Football Club on Wednesday - both start at 11am.

A care home in Ilford is going to be closed to make way for a care village on the same site. Hyleford Residential Care Home will shut down after a consultation with residents and staff. The home isn't registered to provide nursing and dementia care - there's been a big rise in demand for this over the past few years. The council's buying land adjacent to the site of the current care home, but still needs to get planning permission.

A family with a disabled son in Doddinghurst have been the victims of an arson attack. At 1.20am on Sunday 7th February a couple with a 15 year old daughter and a 13 year old son in a wheelchair, were woken by their smoke alarms. Luckily they escaped unharmed from the fire which had been started at their front door on Peartree lane. It's caused £2000 of damage and police are asking for anyone who saw something suspicious to get in touch.

Work has started on the first of London's bike superhighways. One of the 12 planned routes runs from Barking to Tower Gateway via the A13 and Cable Street - another's coming from South London. The routes promise to be direct and continuous. It's all part of Mayor Boris's plans to make cycling in the capital safer and ease congestion.

There are concerns over the legacy of London's Olympic venues after the 2012 Games. The London Assembly says plans for the Olympic sites are "still unclear" and want to make sure the stadium's future use fits with the local community. There have definitely been positive outcomes from the Olympics coming to East London - new parks, buildings and £3 billion spent on infrastructure. But Dee Doocey, Chair of the Committee that's produced this report says communities here deserve more, and that we need a contractual obligation to provide opportunities to resiedents.

A teenager from Upminster has wowed judges in ITV's Britain's Got Talent. 14 year old Katie Thornett was praised by judge Amanda Holden who said she could be the new duffy - because of her 60's style voice. She told us singing in front of the judges was scary - but Simon Cowell wasn't so horrible in person. You'll have to wait until April to find out how Katie gets on.

London's Fire Brigade is warning people about the dangers of chip pan fires, as new figures show they still cause hundreds of fires in London every year. Around 2500 accidental fires in Londoners’ homes were caused by chip pans last year. The advice is to never leave a chip pan alone even for a few seconds and only to fill oil up to two thirds of the pan.

A green fingered council tenant has nurtured a community garden in Thurrock. Theresa Avery started the project on unused land to the back of the Purfleet Housing Office. Theresa says she wants somewhere people from her area can grow food - even if they don't have a garden. She was helped along her way by Essex and Suffolk Water who not only gave her a water butt, but also two strapping workers to help her dig over the plot.

A Boiler scrappage scheme has had one of the country's lowest uptakes in London. Vouchers that knock £400 off a new energy efficient boiler are being given to people who think it's time they upgraded their heating. Only 4729 vouchers have been sent out in London while 9387 vouchers - nearly double that amount, have been taken by people in the whole of the South East. The government says it can save Londoners up to £200 off their energy bills plus it creates jobs.

A man who owed council tax was told he could pay in installments rather than being made bankrupt - but Thurrock Council also said there would be an administration fee of £400. The Local Government Ombudsman, Tony Redmond, made the ruling last week - saying there's no law that meant the council could introduce this charge. The man's getting a £40 goodwill payment plus an additional £60 for his time and trouble in dealing with the complaint.

A 44 year old woman is appearing at the Old Bailey today charged with the murder of a 12 year old boy. He was found dead at a house in Barking on Tuesday the 9th of February. A post mortem revealed he'd died fom ingesting bleach. For legal reasons we can't name anyone involved in the case - the woman was in custody over the weekend after a hearing at Barking Magistrates Court on Friday.

A woman from Barkingside is asking the government's medicine's watchdog to reconsider taking a life saving drug off the NHS. When Maureen Bendall started taking Dasatinib in July she was able to keep her disease under control. Now the government's medicine's watchdog NICE says the drug is too expensive to keep prescribing to others in a similar position to Maureen.

A judge has said he will sentence a terminally ill paedophille even if he has to do it from the mans bedroom. Judge Timothy Lamb QC will set up a court around 64 year old Keith Inwood's bed in Hornchurch if he refuses to attend court. Mr Inwood - who suffers with Motor nuerone disease - turned away an ambulance on 29th January when it came to take him to court to be sentance on several internet child pornography charges.

A man from Brentwood has been found guilty of over £20,000 of benefit fraud. Marc Bangs failed to tell Brentwood council he became employed - and continued reciving housing and council tax benefit for many years. He was sentenced to a 9 month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Voluntary and community groups in Harold Hill are being offered the chance to get funding to improve the work they do. Grants of between twenty and a thousand pounds are available as part of a multi-million pound project by Havering Council to regenerate the area. A petition with 15,000 signatures on is being delivered to Downing Street later - calling for plans to build a 1,500 inmate category B prison in Dagenham to be scrapped. Barking and Dagenham council leader Liam Smith and Dagenham MP John Cruddas will present the petition to Gordon Brown hoping he'll step in and block plans to build on the old Ford plant in South Dagenham. A recent survey by the council showed 90% of people in Dagenham were strongly against the plans.

27 year old woman will return to Romford police station this afternnon in relation to an incident on Saturday 3rd January. It's alleged she assulted a 34 year old woman after an argument over a parking space at Tesco in Rainham. The victim was knocked to the floor and had her head banged several times on the ground. The suspect is described as a white woman in her early 30s, slim and about 5ft 6ins - 5ft 7ins. She had long straight dyed red hair, possibly with a fringe.

Tough new measures have been brought in to stop shops in Redbridge selling alcohol to any under 18. It used to be the council had to wait until a shop had broken the rules of selling alcohol to youngsters 3 times before they could really do anything. Now a change in the law means the shop could be shut down for 48 hours and staff prosecuted after just two breaches. Officals went out to eight stores in Redbridge last month and found two of them sold alcohol to someone under 18.

An armed robber who stole cash from a security van in Ilford has been sentenced to seven years in prison. 42 year old Gary Scott from London was with another man when the pair threatened a security guard at the Post Office in Gordon Road with some sort of firearm last year. They then stole cash boxes full of money before making off in a stolen car.

Two dogs have been found dumped in woods around Wennington Marshes. The RSPCA say a dog walker found the pair tied up on Thursday morning. Officers say they'd been left no food or water and had probably been there all night.

The council's writing to it's 19,000 tenants to reassure them that persistant home breakers will no longer be given a home. Barking and Dagenham police are offering free door alarms in a bid to cut burgalry rates in the borough. Officers are issuing the security devices to anyone who lives or works locally. The small alarm is hung on the inside of an exterior door and emits a high pitch alarm if the door is tampered with.

London Underground says it intends to provide a good service across the network during strike action by maintenance workers. Around 750 members of the RMT Union are planning the first of a series of 24 hour walkouts from 6-45 this morning. They're involved in a row over rosters and the outsourcing of work. Three lines are likely to be affected - the Victoria, Bakerloo and Central.

A Rainham woman has been treated in hospital after a row over a parking space at the Tesco supermarket on Bridge Road. The 34 year old was targeted after the occupants of annother car claimed she had taken their spot. The victim was assaulted, pushed to the floor and had her head repeatedly banged on the ground. She was left with bruises and missing hair. The suspect is described as a white woman in her early 30s, slim and about 5ft 6ins - 5ft 7ins. High visibility patrols are to take place on a Redbridge footpath in order to make locals feel safer. Officers will walk along Footpath 34, which runs between Forest Road and Inverness Drive. The path is adjacent to several sports clubs in the area who will be asked to be considerate of local residents.

Hornchurch traders are being linked up to a network which allows them to alert each other about theives. Traders in the station and on Suttons Lane will be linked to the system offering greater security. The system uses a satelite network to link businesses together so they can trigger a silent alarm. So far, over 350 AlertBox units have been installed by Council community safety officers across the borough.

A news service to tackle holmelessness across Redbridge has been widely welcolmed. Nine self contained flats in Chadwell Heath have all been filled since November by people from the Redbridge Night Shelter and the Welcome Centre. As well as a roof over their heads they get support and advice to help them find permanent accomodation.

A Hornchurch man's become the victim of a sophisticated scam to trick the taxman into handing over hundred of pounds. Gary Taylor from Rye Close claims the scammers had hacked into his secure account on the customs and revenue website and filed a fake tax return. They changed his bank details to they could get the money without anyone noticing - Mr Taylor said he only notice the fraud when he went to file his tax return last week.

Police searching for a man who was last seen in Ilford on Monday say he could now be in Lincolnshire. Seventy-three year old Peter McKenna from Chelmsford was last seen by his son Barry at around 2pm. A red Vauxhall Agila was seen in Boston on Tuesday with a matching number plate. Mr McKenna is described as white, 5' 10”, balding with patches of white hair, clean shaven, wears glasses, and was last seen wearing grey jogging bottoms, a dark brown khaki fleece, a jumper which was possibly blue and brown Hush Puppies shoes.

A group of Barking police officers are being praised for jumping into freezing water and rescuing a woman. Officers were alerted when the woman called them and said she wanted to jump off the bridge into Barking Creek. As the woman slid into the freezing water Police Sergeant Rob Bell jumped into the water and saved her life.

An east London stunt man is planning to break the sound barrier with a world record parachute jump Streve Truglia from Wanstead wants to break the 1960 worlds 'high altitude parachute jump' record - by jumping from 120 thousand feet. Funding has been secured to regenerate the Dagenham washlands around the River Beam. The £1.5-million will used to transform the flood storage area into a green space for local residents. Its hoped the move will help regenerate the area which has suffered anti social behaviour problems.

An urn containing ashes has been discovered in the garden of an Elm Park House. They were discovered in the rear garden of the property on Rosebank Avenue during renovations. One of Havering's best known pensioners has died after a short illness. Eighty-six year old Marcia Benson died on Saturday after a short illness at Queens Hospital. She was a prominent local campaigner on many issues including pensioners rights, the NHS and public transport. Havering council say her death will be noted at a borough meeting next week.

The latest project of Woodside Primary Junior pupils was to use a police speed warning device around King Edward Drive around school time. In recent weeks pupils have also spoken to parents parking near the school about stopping on the kerbs and on the corners of junctions.

Newham market traders will be helping reduce landfill waste with a new recycling scheme. Around 160 stall holders at Queens Market have started donating unsold fruit and vegetables to city farms. Staff are hoping to contribute to the government's plans to cut 1,500 tonnes of waste from landfill each year.

An elderly man has died after driving down the wrong way on the A12. The 89 year old was travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway near Stratford St Mary between Suffolk and Essex on Saturday night. Other drivers managed to swerve the vehicle but a 26 year old man from Chelmsford, and a 39 year old man from Ipswhich suffered minor injuries.

Essex commuters are being consulted on the local rail franchises which are due to come up for grabs next year. The eastern route is currently served by National Express East Anglia and C2C services. The consultation will run until 19 April and new franchises will come into operation on 1 April 2011. The east of England transport minister says in the tenders from firms, he wants to see improved stations and better security for travellers.

A Dagenham mother who gave her brain-damaged son a lethal heroin injection is appealing against her sentence and conviction. Frances Inglis was today found guilty of murder after admitting she killed her 22 year-old son Tom to end his "living hell". He suffered severe head injuries after falling out of a moving ambulance in 2007. The case will be heard at the court of appeal.

Nearly everyone surveyed recently say they'd accept an organ but only a quarter are registered. Lis Horsford got one of her mum's kidneys over 20 years ago when hers stoppped working.

A fourth man has been arrested over the murder and abduction of a man found dying in the street in east London. Syed Abbass, who was 24, was discovered badly beaten near waste ground in East Ham in September. It's believed he was dragged from a street in the Forest Gate area into a silver Audi car which was later found burnt-out. The 25 year old suspect from Ilford remains in police custody.

The House of Commons Justice Commitee says an ever expanding programme of prison building would be a drain on resources. Leader Liam Smith says the report is another nail in the coffin for the 1500 capacity, category B jail on the site of the old Ford Plant.

An Essex hospital is being taken to court over the death of a severly disabled patient there. 20 year old Kyle Flack was found dead with his head trapped in the rails around his bed at Basildon University Hospital in 2006. Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals Trust is charged with failing to ensure the patient's safety under the Health and Safety at Work Act. The case gets underway this Friday.

Havering Police are appealing for information after a robbery of an eighty-seven year old woman on Thursday in Hornchurch. It happened about quarter to five in the evening between High Street and Appleton Way. A man - described as being in his late 20's snatched her handbag just after she'd collected her pension. The suspect is described as a white male, in his late 20s, slim build, about 5’11” tall wearing a black zip-up top with 2 white stripes on the sleeves, dark jeans and trainers.

Ilford MP's are calling on Redbridge Council to oppose the closure of A&E services at King George Hospital. Under current plans emergency cases would be taken to Whipps Cross hospital in Leytonstone or Queen's in Romford. Mike Gapes and Lee Scott are using parliament to lobby the council.

Funding to promote cycling across Redbridge is once again being offered this year following it's massive success last year. Transport for London is offering the money to any organisation who wants to encourage residents to get healthy. Applications to the scheme need to be in by March 26th at the latest.

Havering residents are being invited to sign up to a new communications service by the borough police. Anyone who joins up to the scheme will receive emails, text messages and voice messages directly to their home or work phones, or computers. The idea is to keep residents informed of what's going on in the borough - things like witness appeals and the minutes of public meetings.

Around six thousand Havering residents were fined for not filing their tax return online last year. Now the Inland Revenue is urging locals to avoid a hundred pound penalty fine. Three people are being questioned in connection with the murder of the Barking man who died after chasing robbers. Sukhwinder Singh was killed near Barking station last Friday. The 31-year old died after confronting a group of men who had snatched a woman's handbag. He'd been stabbed through the heart.

West Ham have been found GUILTY of two counts of failing to control their fans at the League Cup match with Millwall back in August. All of the FA charges against Millwall remain unproven, with another 2 charges against the Hammers dropped. The allegations that both clubs failed to prevent racist behaviour by fans at Upton Park alos remains unproven. The club will receive its punishment from the independant commission on Friday.

Ilford police are appealing for witnesses after a 29 year old man was stabbed at an Ilford nightclub. It happened at the Funky Mojo's Night Club sometime between midnight and one o'clock in the morning. The vicitm was stabbed in the stomach and his kidney was punctured.

There's been a big drop in the number of people visiting the dentist in east London. Check ups are at their lowest level since 2001, according to research. Just over 40 per cent of us go at least once every six months. Fear and a lack of local dentists are the main reasons for us staying away. Insurance firm Denplan, who conducted the study, say many of our concerns are unjustified.

The body of a British soldier killed in Afghanistan has been repatriated back to RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire. Private Robert Hayes of Essex's 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment died in Helmand Province last week. Later, his coffin will pass through nearby Wootton Bassett, where crowds will pay their respects. The 19 year-old was on a security patrol when he was hit by a roadside bomb.

It was organised by local Green Party members but was attended by key people from across the political spectrum including local MP's Lee Scott and Mike Gapes. They're all worried at the potential loss of life saving care from the Redbridge Primary Care Trust run hospital.

Tributes are being paid to a man who was killed after chasing muggers who'd snatched a woman's handbag. Sukhwinder Singh was fatally stabbed trying to stop two robbers near Barking station in east London yesterday evening. Mr Singh, who's originally from India, had lived in the UK with relatives for around 10 years. Thurrock Council is having to lower the amount of roads it needs to grit - because the government have told them to. The West Essex council had it's largest supply of rock salt for years. Due to the lengthy period of cold weather stocks are being limited - meaning some roads won't get gritted. The council say people should take extra care because their road may not be gritted.

Police are appealing for information after a woman's body was found in the River Lea in east London just before Christmas. It's believed Musonda Chimfebe walked down the towpath just north of where the Docklands Light Railway bridge crosses the river but it's not known how she ended up in the water. Officers want to hear from anyone who may have seen the 20 year olds handbag lying neatly on the tow path on the evening of the 12th December. Musonda's death is being treated as unexplained.

The freezing temperatures has led to a 50 percent increase in burst water pipes and leaks across Havering. Thames Water are asking anyone who spots a leak on the street or pavement to call them immediately so they can fix it and then grit the area to make it safe. They warn the difficult driving conditions has meant its taking their staff much longer than normal to reach problems.

Essex police say they received dozens of complaints of anti social behaviour involving snow on Wednesday. The majority of the 100 calls received were over snowballs, cllosely followed by car breakdowns and accidents. The flood of complaints were made in just 12 hours from dusk until dawn.

East London and West Essex locals are being warned to stay away from Queens and King George’s accident and emergency wards, unless it’s a true emergency. The units have been inundated with non emergency visits since the the snowy weather began , with some people having to wait for up to seven hours to be seen. One of the two people who died in a fire on New Years Day in Ilford has still not been identified. Police are now hoping the local community will help them to find out who the man is. He’s believed to be under the age of 30, of Indian origin and called Jessie. The blaze broke out above a shop on the High Road in the early hours of the 1st January. The second man who died has been identified as the homeowner of the property. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Redbridge Council are coming under fire from campaigners who say they want clarity on proposals for a new swimming pool. There is currently only one swimming pool in the borough serving a quarter of a million people-that's more than 4 times the recommended number. A group of campaigners say that Warren Hall in Cambridge Park could be converted into a swimming pool cheaply something which the council says it will consider.

Police are renewing their appeals for any witnesses or info regarding a murder in Harold Hill which happened six years ago today. 25 year old Christopher Taylor was murded outside Electric Board and Social Club on Brampton Road on New Years Day 2004. He was stabbed by a man trying to break up an argument between Mr Taylor and his girlfriend. Two men were arrested in November last year and were bailed to return to a police station later this month. The suspect, who had nothing to do with the event at the social club, was described as a white man aged 25-35 years, between 5ft 8ins and 6ft 2ins tall. He had mousy-coloured hair swept back and wore a dark jacket. During the incident Chris's uncle threw a bottle at the suspect as he ran away, which could possibly have left an injury.

A 29-year old man from Chingford will appear at Waltham Forest magistrates court later charged with the manslaughter of a man the weekend before Christmas. Barry Oliver is accused of killing 23 year old David Joslin -who'd been out celebrating at a Christmas works party when he was punched trying to break up an argument on Old Church Road. He was knocked out and never regained conciousness before he died on Sunday. A man and a woman arrested yesterday have been bailed pending further enquires.

One in three children across the borough are living in Poverty according the childrens charity Barnado's. A 46 year old man's from Barking been charged with fraud and perverting the course of justice over an insurance claim. An investigation was launched after his insurance company contacted police saying they belived a claim was false. The man's been bailed to appear at court in January.

Parents across Barking, Havering and Redbridge are being asked to help improve a failing hospital. King George Hospital in Ilford was heavily citicised by a Healthcare Commission report in last year. It said more than a women were denided painkillers during childbirth - although this year they were praised for the improvement in services The NHS trust which runs the hospital is asking for vollunteers to help impove the maternity services.

Barking and Dagenham police have been given extra powers to tackle drug abuse. The council's given them authority to move suspected drug dealers from Park Avenue area of Abbey ward. It comes after several complaints from local people about persistent anti-social behaviour in the area. The new powers allow the police to arrest anyone around who doesn't live on the local estate.

155 homeowners in Ilford avoided eviction thanks to help from the courts. They're among more than 8,000 people across London avoided immediate eviction. More legal protection is to be offered to struggling homeowners under new plans released today. The photocard is being discontinued and replaced with a photo on an Oyster-like smartcard. The widower of reality TV star Jade Goody, has denied two counts of rape. Jack Tweed appeared via videolink from Pentonville Prison earlier today. It's alleged he met a 19-year old woman at a Mayfair nightclub in September before inviting her back to his house and attacking her. The judge remanded Mr Tweed in custody and set a trial for 12 April.

More than two thousand people have spent part of the night trapped in the Channel Tunnel after four Eurostar trains broke down. It's thought the cold conditions caused them to fail. All the passengers have now been moved from the trains and are being taken to London's St Pancras International station.

Havering Residents will be able to get to a wild green space in Dagenham thanks to a grant worth a quarter of a million pounds. The Veolia Cleanaway Havering Riverside Trust has given money to build a new footbridge, better paths and cycle ways. Its part of the Beam Parklands Improvement Project which will connect 40,000 people in the Beam Valley to the River Thames for the first time in 90 years.

Upminister MP Angela Watkinson is calling for teachers to have more powers to tackle bullying in Schools. New figures show only 90 children were expelled across the UK last year despite the a new survey saying half of 14 year olds have been bullied. In Havering 20 pupils were suspended from state schools although none were expelled. Ms Watkinson criticises the government over that, saying it means they disrupt hard working pupils when they return.

An 18 year old man is in a stable hospital after being stabbed in Romford. The incident happened in Lidl carpark on Atlanta Boulevard on early Saturday morning. The suspect in this case is described as of either mixed race or Asian appearance, aged late teens to early twenties wearing dark clothing. There have been no arrests at present.

A Hornchurch waste carrier company that dumped sub-soil around homes in Kent has been fined more than eleven thousand pounds. Eden Grab Services limited pleaded guilty to seven charges of depositing waste at an unauthorised site between West Addington and Biggin Hill.

An investigation's been launched after a man died in a road crash in Rainham. Forty one year old Frederick Adam's car was the only vehicle involved in the accident last on 8th December Police were called out just after half 11 last Tuesday to Berwick Pond Rd in Rainham where Mr Adams Volkswagen Golf had been involved in a collision. He was taken to Queen's hospital with significant head injuried but died before 1pm. At this stage police say there's no indication that any other vehicle or person was involved in the accident and anyone with information about what happened is being asked to get in touch with police. An Ilford Father and his 7 month old baby have been evacuated from their home after a van was set on fire on their driveway. The flames from the parked vehicle spread to the front of the house on Fencepiece Road. Police are appealing for witnesses after an armed robbery in Upminster. Officers were called to the First Choice Travel on Corbets Tey Road on Friday at around 5pm. A male suspect ordered a female staff member to open the safe before threatening her with a firearm and stealing the contents. The suspect is described as white, aged about 45 years, about 5’9” tall, of thin build and had blue eyes.

Budding chefs from the Eastbury Comprehensive School in Barking, have won the very first borough wide cooking competition. The 'Food in Focus' competition took place in secondary schools was judged by celebrity ched Cyrus Todiwala. The winning chefs used their £30 budget to produce Moroccan spiced turkey kebabs with a dessert of apply and cranberry filo tarts.

A aspiring rap artist from Romford who plotted to kill his friends pregnant schoolgirl has been jailed. 19 year old Kingsley Ogundele of Retford Road and Brandon Jolie beat the fifteen year old with a metal pole in London because they saw her as a threat to their music careers. They've been sentenced to 14 years and 18 years respectively.

Fifty thousand pounds is being pledged to help stop illegal subletting of council houses in Redbridge. The government are putting up the cash and the money will go towards the Redbridge campaign against fraud involving social housing. The borough council say fraudsters sign up for a council home and then subletting it to make money on rent and living elsewhere. The extra money will be put towards initiatives like the council's whistleblowing scheme which encouraged residents to share information about people who are cheating the system.

A man has been arrested and released on police bail following a crash on the A127 in which a man died. It happened in the early hours of yesterday morning between the Halfway House and the Dunton turnoff. The road remained shut until around 10am causing delays of two hours. The 40 year old taxi driver who was held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has now been released on bail pending further inquiries.

A Hornchurch school is mourning the loss of one of their young pupils. 12 year old Rianna Wingett collapsed towards the end of her PE class at the Abbs Cross School last Friday. Despite immediate first aid treatment, she later died at Queens Hospital. Doctors discovered she had a heart defect which nobody knew about.

Valentines Mansion in Redbridge is set to enjoy a brush with contemporary art. Professional artists are taking up residents there as part of a drive to promote visual art across the borough. South Woodford resident Julian Walker will be the first artist to showcase his work at the historoc Emerson Road building. Metropolitan Police officers across East London have carried out raids to tackle domestic, homophobic and race hate crime. The operation is part of sixteen days of activity by the Met - trying to combat all forms of violence against women. Over one hundred arrests across the have been made for a range of crimes as part of the crackdown. Police hope high visibilty outings like this will lower attacks across the capital.

A school from Rainham is to competing in the regional final of the UK's largest enterprise challenge. The Chafford School are one of five schools from Essex taking part in the East of England final at the Imperial War Museum. They could win £1000 if they win the national final in London.

Eager young cyclists have been recieving some expert training today as part of a scheme to try and get all youngsters cycling. They've learnt how to ride, maintain and repair their bikes as part of the Bike It project. Road safety is encouraged and the project works with parents and teachers as well to try and overcome barriers of cycling to school. Nearly 72% of children who have this basic training go on and have further road cycling training.

Nearly nine million pounds in parking fines was earnt by local councils over the past year. Figures obtained by the Tax Payers Alliance show that in Barking and Dagenham they made over three million pounds - that works out at nearly £34 per person. Redbridge council made nearly £24 per person while Havering made just £12 - all well above the national average of £6. The highest amount though was in Kensington and Chelsea - they made a whopping £85 per person.

Lottery players in Havering are being asked to double-check their tickets - there is a £137,591 prize waiting to be claimed. The ticket was for the draw Saturday 7th November this year - the winning numbers on that date were 19,21,39,44,45,49 and bonus was 47. The lucky ticket holder needs to contact Camelot by Thursday 6th May 2010.

New double yellow lines on Station Lane in Hornchurch to ease congestion are coming under fire from local driving instructors. They say not being able to park outside the test centre could stop people taking their test in Havering and ultimately lose them business. The council say the proposals come after both the fire brigade and ambulance service complained about congestion.

Women from east London's black and ethnic minorities are being urged to help break down stereotypes associated with firefighting. The London Fire Brigade say there's still a misconception staff are male and white. 239 of the 6000 people employed by the LFB are currently women - a figure the orgnaisation want to increase.

A Barking mother has been given a suspended prison sentence for claiming housing benefit without declaring that she and her landlord had a son together. Farah Khan, formerly of Hurstbourne Gardens pleaded guilty to making three countrs of making false statements at Snaresbrook Crown Court. Khan, who is preganant and has an eight month old daughter was sentenced to 12 months for each offence, to run concurrently, suspended for two years.

A man was treated for burns after a fire broke out at an industrial unit in Redbridge on Sunday. The blaze which is under investigation broke out at the units on Roding Lane North in Woodford around 3 o'clock. It took 30 firefighters and six fire engines until 10.30pm to put it out. Eight people were evacuated while ten cars and four portacabins were damaged.

A Havering MP is lending her support to a road safety campaign taking place this week. The MP for Upminster Angela Watkinson is backing the safety message to drivers of 'Not a drop, Not a drag' Road safety charity Brake say drink and drug driving are two major killers on our roads. They're urging drivers to make a commitment to stay away from both before getting behind the wheel.

Angry Thurrock councillors want to see extra infrastructure put in place before any new housing demands are made on them. Councillors made the comments during a disucssion about the proposed future plans for housing in the East of England Members of the committee argue the region is getting gridlocked. They want to see new roads, shops, jobs and GP practices before new homes are forced on the area.

Young offenders are offering a helping hand to community projects in Redbridge. The idea of the 'Making Good Project' is to help young people aged 10 to 17 and who've been in trouble with the law, to give something back. The project's run by the council's Youth Offending Team. It's hoped the free labour will help confront their attitudes and deter them from further crime.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a security guard was robbed and threatened with an iron bar in Collier Row. The woman was approached by two black men outside the Natwest bank at 1540 on Tuesday 17th November. She dropped the box containing cash and the suspects made off towards Hainault in a new blue Ford Fiesta.

The Gants Hill library's set to get a make-over to take it into the future. Work to the 1930's building will be sympathetic and include repairs to the buildings original features like suspended ceiling. Residents are being invited to give their opinion on the news plans at an open day on Tuesday 8th. Work will start in January and take three months to complete.

A teenager's had his bike stolen at knife point in Collier Row. Police are asking witnesses to come forward following the robbery on fields by the A12 on October 28th. Two men threatened the 15 year old before making off towards Dagenham with the scrambler bike.
