  BARKING RUGBY

Barking RFC 34 Cinderford  7 at Goresbrook

National League One

Alex Terry reports from Goresbrook...

A vintage second half performance from newly-promoted Barking gave them a superb opening day victory as they beat Cinderford 34-7 running in six tries in the process.

Barking dominated the opening exchanges but it was Cinderford who took a surprise lead on 23 minutes as Barking winger Scott Alfeld had his kick charged down by Kyle Palm who ran free to score the first try of the game, despite the best efforts of David Vincent who tried in vain to stop his opponent. Cinderford added the conversion to take a shock 7-0 lead.

Barking, who are unbeaten at home in 18 months replied instantly through a James Ngan try after a brilliant move from the backs. Harry Owens played a lovely inside pass to winger Scott Alfeld who broke the line of defence and offloaded to centre Henry Staff to keep the attack moving. Barking were quick to recycle the ball catching the opponents off guard as Ngan touched down in the left hand corner to complete a free-flowing move that narrowed the score line to 5-7. This wasn’t improved upon as Harry Owens missed the conversion, one of many during the game.

There was a slight setback for the home side on 30 minutes as they were reduced to 14 men following Aaron Liffchak’s yellow card. The home side didn’t show the signs of a team down to 14 men as they took the lead for the first time through a try from the outstanding David Vincent. Vincent received the ball on the right hand flank before powering his way through two tackles and running in the try from 30 yards out. The conversion was narrowly wide as Barking took a 12-7 lead into half-time.

The second half saw another minor setback for the home side as Jared Saunders was the second Barking player to see yellow after tackling his opposite number in the air straight from the kick-off. It was unfortunate for the prop as he had only come on as a substitute at Half-time, giving him what was probably his shortest stint on a rugby field in his career.

Barking survived the ten minutes they were short and just after they were restored to a full team they extended there lead after a terrific interception just outside there twenty-two. This left the rapid Nicholas Fraser to touch down after he couldn’t be caught from 50 metres out. This gave Barking a 17-7 lead and saw them edge ever closer to victory.

Barking’s backs showed there true class on 61 minutes as they swept the ball across field to leave Vincent one-on-one with the defender and he blasted through the tackle to go over for his second try of the game and Barking’s fourth.

The tries flooded in during the last 15 minutes as the away side showed there fatigue and Barking ran in two more tries through Harry Owens and Samuel Stanley, both brilliant individual tries. Stanley added a conversion to give Barking a well deserved 34-7 victory and set them up perfectly for there next encounter against pre-season favourites London Scottish. Backs coach and centre Kevin Sorrell said after the game that he was looking forward to that game in particular, as there team features a few ex-Barking players.
